What Is BHB (Beta-Hydroxybutyrate), and Why Is It in a Men's Daily Supplement?

Turn over the label on a men's daily supplement and, somewhere between the B vitamins and the zinc, you may find a line that reads Beta-Hydroxy-Butyrate. Most people know BHB from keto drinks and low-carb diets, so it is a fair question: what is it doing in an everyday men's formula, and does it mean the product is a keto supplement?

The short answer is no. Here is what BHB is, why it appears on labels as a mineral salt, and what the label actually tells you, using Foundations Men's Health Support as the worked example.

What BHB is

Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a small molecule your own body makes. When you go several hours without eating, exercise for a long stretch, or eat very few carbohydrates, the liver converts some stored fat into compounds called ketone bodies, and BHB is the most plentiful of them. Muscles, the heart and the brain can all use it as an energy source alongside glucose.

So BHB is not a foreign ingredient. It is something your metabolism already produces every day, in larger amounts overnight while you sleep.

Why it shows up as a "salt"

On its own, BHB is an acid, so supplements bind it to a mineral to make a stable powder. That is where calcium BHB, magnesium BHB and sodium BHB come from.

The Foundations Men's label shows this in two places. The morning MantraVive™ blend lists 192 mg of beta-hydroxybutyrate from calcium, magnesium and sodium salts, with the minerals counted separately: 10 mg of calcium, 10 mg of magnesium and 5 mg of sodium. The Novavirili™ capsule also uses magnesium BHB as the source of its 30 mg of magnesium, so it contributes some additional BHB that the label counts as magnesium rather than listing as a separate BHB amount.

This is the part most people miss. In this formula BHB does two jobs at once: it contributes BHB itself, and it is the carrier form for some of the formula's minerals, in the same way that other minerals on the same label arrive as glycinate or picolinate.

How the amount compares with a ketone drink

Context matters here. Ketone drinks and powders sold for keto diets typically deliver several grams of BHB per serving, often in the range of 8 to 12 grams. Counting both the MantraVive™ line and the magnesium BHB in the Novavirili™ capsule, the daily packet comes to a few hundred milligrams: a small fraction of a single ketone drink.

So a daily formula like this is not a keto product. It is not designed to change the way your diet works, and you do not need to follow a low-carb diet to take it.

What it does is add a modest amount of a compound the body already uses for fuel, sitting alongside the B-complex vitamins that help the body turn food into energy, CoQ10, and the rest of the core blend. Think of it as one supporting piece of an everyday energy routine rather than the headline ingredient.

How to take it, and who should check first

  • With food. The label reads: take entire "Morning" Packet during the day with food and 8oz of water.
  • No diet change needed. You do not need to cut carbohydrates for the BHB in a formula like this to have a place in your routine.
  • If you already use a ketone drink, count everything you take and mention it to your healthcare professional.
  • If you keep an eye on sodium or calcium, the label lists 5 mg of sodium and 10 mg of calcium from the BHB salts in the core blend, so you can add them up.
  • Talk to your healthcare professional first if you take prescription or over-the-counter medications, if you have an existing health condition, or if you have lab work or a procedure coming up.

A supplement is designed to complement a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, not replace them.

The takeaway

BHB is a ketone body your own metabolism makes from stored fat. On a men's daily supplement label it usually appears as calcium, magnesium and sodium salts, which means it doubles as a mineral carrier. In Foundations Men's Health Support it adds up to a few hundred milligrams a day, a supporting part of a broader daily routine rather than a keto product, and you do not need to change how you eat to take it.
